Another Quick Meme…
Okay, so first I was tagged by Susan over at Sticky, Gooey, Creamy, Chewy for the 5 things meme. Well luckily I have already done that meme once. If you want to re-visit it, you can find it here.
Then Roni, from GreenLiteBites tagged me for the 7 things you didn’t realize you needed to know about me and food…Meme. I have NOT done that one yet, so here we go…
1) I do not like Marjoram. I hate when people say it tastes like Oregano, because it does not. Oregano is my favorite herb and I know it doesn’t taste icky.
2) I don’t like cooked celery. I used to hate celery all together, but now I can deal with it when it is raw and crunchy – but that is all. If there is cooked celery in soup or something else, I have to pick it out.
3) I am not a chocolate freak, I am a vanilla girl.
4) I have been known to throw people’s Splenda out when they aren’t looking…;)
5) I have a sensitivity to Soy, so I only eat it once in a while, if I go out for sushi or if there is soy sauce hiding in something.
6) I used to not eat fruit – EVER. Now I have found fruits that I enjoy – namely – Papaya, Cantaloupe, Pomegranate, Blueberries, Grapes, Figs and fresh Apricots (although I love them dried too).
7) I don’t like eating Italian food out – it usually does not live up to its potential (that sounds snobby, doesn’t it??!!!) 🙂

Number 7 is the absolute truth. I have only ever found one restaurant to beat the Italian meals that we have at home…stuffed chicken in red sauce being my fave!!!
Jen in MI - February 26, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Do most things out ever beat what we can create at home? And good for you for tossing that Splenda! 😉
courtney - February 26, 2008 at 1:15 pm
I so agreee about the Italian food eaten out. I have always prefered my own . Its weird. Maybe I over flavor it ,but thats the way I like it.
Lilian - February 26, 2008 at 1:21 pm
An interesting list. Why don’t you like marjoram? Does it remind you of something else unpleasant? Fortunately, you won’t be subjected to it much in other people’s cooking–most Americans don’t use it (opting for oregano instead). I never used it until I acquired a copy of Deborah Madison’s “Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone” (now one of my favorite all-purpose cookbooks). Madison is (evidently) a big fan of the herb–it’s included in quite a few recipes. I think it’s marvellous with lentils–not that that opinion will be of any importance to you (unless you change your mind).
Please do continue to write about how bad Splenda is! (I’m with you on that one.) More people need to be informed of its (probable) unhealthiness.
I agree with #7, too. Outside of Italy, Italian food cooked anywhere but at home usually disappoints–unless you’re going to a restaurant in a known Italian “zone” (Boston’s North End, say, or New York’s Little Italy). …I wonder if the food at Babbo (at which Gina DePalma is pastry chef) is as good as reputed.
Peter G - February 26, 2008 at 2:16 pm
LOL! Throwing out the Splenda (what a good move!) and I too have issues with celery…(although its getting better)..
Deborah - February 26, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Thanks for throwing out the Splenda!! It makes me sick, as well as several people that I know, so I can’t imagine that it is good for anyone!
Sue - February 26, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Such an interesting post, Jenn. You know what’s interesting about these memes? Even though let’s admit it, we all sigh when we get one, they really could work to foster world peace, because we get to see how alike we all are.
I NEVER use marjoram. Since learning a hundred years ago that it was a cousin to oregano, I ALWAYS use oregano.
Cooked celery is icky, except in stuffing and very few soups.
AND Italian restaurants are always my last choice, because I think they’re boring. There IS one important exception…when you’re IN Italy, they’re not boring.
Alanna - February 26, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Yay, another vanilla girl!!! 🙂
*high fives*
Astra Libris - February 26, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Hooray for your marjoram answer! You are so completely right… It absolutely does N-o-t taste like oregano…
superluckykitchen - February 26, 2008 at 8:58 pm
italian food is absolutely interesting when in rome, but other than that i havent found a good place in ny. is splenda seriously that bad? not that i would trade my brown sugar addiction for anything, but my mom and brother are both diabetic and LOVE splenda
Bellini Valli - February 26, 2008 at 11:20 pm
I love vanilla as well Jenn…I even have tons of vanilla scented candles….but…I love chocolate too…and no chocolate scented candles 😀
Heather - February 27, 2008 at 12:42 am
I am so with you on the fruit thing (I noticed that you like the “savory” fruits like me), and I never eat Italian out either. It is fun to read about people, even if it’s not always fun to talk about ourselves – thanks for doing this one! 🙂
Cakelaw - February 27, 2008 at 12:44 am
Hi Jenn, I hear ya on the Italian food issue. Home-cooked is way better.
The Leftover Queen - February 27, 2008 at 12:19 pm
I am glad I am not the only one, Judy.
Thanks Jen! Yes that is true about home cooked meals! 🙂
See Courtney! We are not alone!!! I am not sure what the deal is either – it just isn’t that great out.
Lilian – I just don’t like it. To me, it tastes awful. I have tried it many times and I just don’t like it.
Glad to hear I have your support on Splenda!
I have been to both The North End and Little Italy’s all over, including NYC and I really haven’t been too impressed. I would HOPE Italy would be good! 😉
Thanks Peter G! Yes, there is something odd about celery!
Deborah! I am not surprised it makes you sick – it is really bad for you and the immune system.
I love yout take on doing Memes Sue! 🙂
yay another person who understand my marjoram AND celery issues! That is awesome!
Yay Alanna! High 5 back!!!!
Totally Astra! It is ucky
Yes, superluckykitchen, Splenda REALLLLLLLY is that bad. If your family are diabetic they should look into Stevia or they may be getting more problems than they bargained for!
Valli! Time to get some chocolate scented candles!!!
Yeah, Heather, I never thought of it that way, but those fruits are more savory…interesting…I wonder why that is. Yeah, memes are weird sometimes, but they do get me thinking!
Totally Cakelaw!
Enza - February 27, 2008 at 11:10 pm
I can’t stand celery! Never liked it and probably never will….and that kills me most is celery in tuna salad…yuck!
melissa - February 28, 2008 at 2:51 pm
I would throw out their splenda too. heh.
I offer another nod of agreement on the italian food thing. I always think “I could make this better myself.” and I’m not even any kind of expert. but eating it out just never seems to live up to homemade in my opinion.
thanks for the warm welcome – I saw on your profile that one of your favorite books is the alchemist, which makes you badass right off the bat. 😉
The Leftover Queen - February 28, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I hear ya, Enza!
Thanks Melissa! 🙂
I love being categorized as a Badass! Must be the paleolithic part of my brain 🙂
katie - February 29, 2008 at 4:55 pm
You don’t like CELERY!!!!
I totally agree about the Italian food – unless, of course, one is in Italy…
Maria - March 14, 2008 at 2:32 am
Forgive me Jen for not visiting you in recent weeks – but you’ve been on my mind! I know your wedding preparations are coming up.. so I want to wish you all the best with those. I hope you have a *fabulous* wedding and honeymoon!
Re: your answers here… Interesting about picking the cooked celery out. I’m not much of a fan of tarragon.. and the jury is kind of out on marjoram. Like you I’m also a vanilla girl. I don’t try hard enough to eat fruit (but enjoy the fruits you listed). I also am anti-Splenda and all artificial sweeteners.
sangeeth - October 10, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Oh!Nice to know abt u Jenn. I am a vanilla girl too! same pinch 😉
